USB Type-C is becoming increasingly common in tablets and laptops, but everyone buying accessories with this new standard needs to be careful, as some cheap USB-C products have damaged the computers they were hooked to. We tested the iClever BoostCube USB Type-C Wall Charger ($24.99) to ensure that it’s safe and useful. Read on to find out the results.

Build and Design

All the BoostCube products come in a standard size: 2.1 x 2.1 x 1.1 inches, and include a foldable plug for easier transport, making it slightly smaller than the official Apple USB-C charger. iClever’s offering fits easily in a bag, purse, or backpack, but is only marginally pocketable.

The USB-C charger is available in only one color–white–and there’s the obligatory iClever logo on one side. This item feels very solidly built, and comes across as something that will last through plenty of use.

There’s a single USB Type-C port on the front. Above this is a blue LED that glows dimly when this accessory is plugged into a socket that receiving power. The LED glows brightly when the wall charger is connected to a USB-C device.

Performance

We tested the iClever BoostCube USB Type-C Wall Charger with two computers: the Huawei MateBook and the Apple MacBook 2016. There were no problems with either, and both charged quickly. Specifically, this accessory was able to give the MateBook a 30% charge in just half an hour.

iClever’s product is capable of putting out 30W of power. For comparison, the standard Apple USB-C charger is rated for 29W. That doesn’t mean the BoostCube overpowered the MacBook–it’s designed to not do that.

This product will also work with the Samsung Galaxy TabPro S, though we didn’t have a unit on hand to test it.

Value

iClever’s USB Type-C charger is available from Amazon for $24.99. The official Apple USB-C charger is $39.99 to $49.99, and we could find no real functional difference between them.

There are certainly cheaper options out there, but be careful: it’s possible for shoddily made USB-C accessories to damage the computers they’re connected to.

Conclusion

We recommend anyone who is going to travel with their tablet or laptop have a second charger that stays with their luggage so it can’t be left behind. A good option for this is the iClever BoostCube USB Type-C Wall Charger, as it’s well built, easily portable, and does what it’s designed to do. And all for an affordable price.
